MONTICELLO - The Monticello baseball team used a five-run fourth inning to rally to a 5-4 win over Shullsburg-Benton Friday.
Monticello's Aaron Hefty had a key RBI single in the fourth. Monticello senior Trae Seffrood came through with a clutch two-run single that sliced Shullsburg's lead to 4-3. The Ponies (1-2) took the lead for good when they scored two runs on a Shullsburg error.
"Everyone knew tonight was a really big game for us," Monticello coach Jason Pinnow said. "We had to get our season started with a win."
Monticello senior Corey McGowan pitched a complete game to get the win. He gave up three earned runs on nine hits. He struck out 10 and walked one. He only surrendered two hits after the third inning.
"Corey stepped up on the mound and shut them down," Pinnow said. "Corey really dialed in and hit his spots."
Highland 13, Argyle 3
ARGYLE - Highland exploded for a six-run second inning to cruise to the win over the Orioles.
Argyle (2-1) two runs in the first, but couldn't mount a comeback after falling behind. Highland limited the Orioles to just one run the rest of the way.
Highland had eight hits and three players with multi-hit games including Blake Bodenstein (2 for 3), Brady Rose (2 for 3) and Nic Pierick (2 for 4). Highland's Tyler Kleist was 1 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs. Highland limited Argyle to just two hits.
