Monticello moves on; New Glarus, Black Hawk and Darlington are out

ALBANY - A five-run sixth inning helped the Monticello Ponies break up a pitchers duel and beat the Albany Comets, 5-0 Thursday in a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal. Monticello's Karlie Klossner and Albany's Katie Krupke each pitched five scoreless innings before the Ponies broke through in the sixth.

Claire Geitzel got the big inning started for Monticello with a base hit to right field. Taylor Pfeuti and Marissa Berg both reached with bunt singles, loading the bases. After Taylor Smith hit into a force out at the plate, Klossner delivered an RBI single to drive in the game's first run.

With the bases still loaded and only one out, Jordyn Kubly bashed a three-run double to make it 4-0. Becky Nelson brought home Kubly with the fifth run of the inning on an RBI single.

Klossner was again dominating as she allowed just two hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Opponents have managed just two hits over Klossner over the past 13 innings.

"If we keep playing defense the way we have, we'll be a tough out," Monticello head coach Duane Garrison said.

Berg, Nelson, and Kubly all went 2 for 3 to lead the Ponies. Kaitlyn Schulz had a double to account for one of Albany's two hits as the Comets saw their season end at 4-10.

Monticello (9-4) will meet Barneveld in the regional semifinal Tuesday.

Black Hawk 2


BARNEVELD - The Black Hawk Warriors' season came to an end in a to the Barneveld Eagles in the Division 4 regional quarterfinal Tuesday.

The Eagles got to Black Hawk starting pitcher Abby Schiferl right away, with four runs in the first inning.

The Warriors answered back with two runs in the second inning to close the gap to 4-2 but could get no closer. The Eagles responded with three runs in their half of the second to take a 7-2 lead, then took control with a six-run third inning.

The Warriors got six hits, including a double by junior Katie Powers. Black Hawk ended its season with two wins.



Division 3

Cuba City 24,

New Glarus 0


CUBA CITY - Emily Stotmeister's three-run homer was the big blow in a nine-run first inning, while Megan Hasken and Megan Brogley shut down New Glarus on just one hit in the Cubans' 24-0 win over the Glarner Knights in five innings Thursday.

New Glarus ended its season at 0-21.

Parkview 11, Darlington 0

ORFORDVILLE - Parkview's Rhianna Noble threw a no-hitter and faced just one batter over the minimum as the Vikings beat the Redbirds 11-0 in five innings. Noble walked one and struck out 10.

Darlington's season ends at 0-20.
