HIGHLAND - The Monticello Ponies looked sharp in a non-conference win leading up to their showdown later this week with Barneveld. The Ponies handled the Highland Cardinals 63-43 to improve to 9-3 overall.
Senior guard Tyler Ritschard led the Ponies with 22 points and senior Corey McGowan added 18 points to help the Ponies win their sixth straight game.
"I thought we were able to rebound better in the second half and stopped giving up second-chance points. We played defense a little better and that made the difference," Monticello head coach Mark Olson said.
Monticello (5-0 Six Rivers East) will travel to Barneveld (5-0) Thursday in a battle for first place in the Six Rivers East.
The two teams split their regular season meetings last year with Barneveld winning 56-49 in double-overtime in the sectional semifinal.
