Monticello girls edge Argyle

MONTICELLO - After trailing at the end of the first quarter, the Monticello girls basketball team was able to respond with solid play on both sides of the ball to take the lead and hold on for a 55-47 win over visiting Argyle.

"There was a switch that went off for us. Our focus was sharp, and we were able to take care of the ball and get to the bucket as the game progressed," said Ponies coach Lori Brokopp.

"We went into halftime with the lead and I knew that whichever team that came out with intensity and focus in the third was the team that would be able to pull it together."

After suffering a tough loss to top-ranked Barneveld earlier in the week, Brokopp wanted her team to focus on the positives from that game and not dwell on their mistakes.

"Barneveld is a good team, and after that loss I wanted the girls to take away what went well rather than dwell on the negatives. In carrying that over to tonight's game, I thought that the girls responded very well."

Alyssah Kubly scored a game-high 17 points for the Ponies, with 12 points coming in the second half.

"Part of our offense is her (Kubly) getting to the hole and creating opportunities for herself and her teammates. I talked to her during halftime about making an effort to drive into the lane, and she responded and was able to open up some things for us."

Courtney Leuzinger also scored in double figures for the Ponies, adding 10 points.

Juniors Kylie Johnsen and Jenna Langmeier led Argyle with 13 and 11 points respectively. The Orioles play Darlington on Saturday at the Just-A-Game fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.

Black Hawk 61, Juda 28

SOUTH WAYNE - In applying sound defensive pressure, the Black Hawk Warriors were able to stifle the Juda girls basketball team on Friday night and pick up a 61-28 victory.

"I thought we did a good job of pressuring the ball tonight," said Warriors coach Mike Flanagan.

"Juda is a team that likes to enter the ball into the post and do their damage from there, and our team did a good job in preventing that."

The Warriors were able to hold Juda to only two points in the first quarter, and went into halftime with a 33-8 advantage.

"Offensively we were able to move the ball well and find some open gaps," said Flanagan.

"Our transition offense was successful as well. We were able to get our hands in the passing lane and create some opportunities off of turnovers."

Jen Wellnitz continued her strong play on the season, scoring a game-high 25 points for the Warriors.

Tabatha Davis had nine points for Juda. The Panthers (4-10, 1-5) take on Barneveld next Thursday, Jan. 30.

Brodhead 68, Jefferson 45

JEFFERSON - With a No. 2 ranking in the latest Division 3 polls, the Brodhead girls continued their strong team play on Friday night by picking up a conference crossover win against Jefferson by a score of 68-45.

Despite forcing the host Eagles into committing eight turnovers in the first quarter, the Cardinals only held a three-point advantage heading into the second.

But Brodhead was able to pull away in the following quarter, as Cardinal senior Carly Mohns scored 14 of her game-high 18 points in giving Brodhead a 43-24 lead going into halftime.

Three other players scored in double figures for the Cardinals, as Kylie Moe, Meg Duffield, and Amber Pickel each added 14, 11, and 10 points respectively.

The Cardinals host Whitewater next Thursday, Jan. 30.

Barneveld 77, Pecatonica 27

PECATONICA - It was a match of complete opposites on Friday night in Pecatonica, as the winless Vikings had to tackle the challenge of handing the unbeaten Barneveld Golden Eagles their first loss on the season.

Unfortunately for the Vikings, that challenge was not answered as they fell to the Eagles by a score of 77-27.

"Barneveld is a strong and athletic team," said Vikings coach Scott Carlson. "They make it tough on you as a team when they're able to bring in girls with both size and athleticism."

Clara Moen had 11 points for the Vikings (0-14, 0-7) who host Riverdale on Monday, Jan. 27.
