CASSVILLE - Monticello softball coach Duane Garrison said "one big mental mistake" essentially saddled the Ponies with their first loss of the season.

The good news, Garrison said, is how his squad responded.

Five players collected two hits apiece and the Ponies used a 12-hit attack in defeating Cassville 7-2 in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday. Cassville defeated Monticello 5-3 in the opener, handing the Ponies (6-1) their first loss.

"I told them that maybe that loss did us more good than anything," Garrison said. "If you're going to lose, I'd rather lose in non-conference than in the (Six Rivers East) Conference, and we've got a big week coming up."

The Ponies' Nos. 5-8 hitters went 7-for-10 in the nightcap. Junior Jordyn Kubly was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs, and Samantha DeVoe also was 2-for-2 with one RBI. Marissa Berg, Karlie Klossner and Kelsey Jacobson all went 2-for-4.

Monticello snapped a 2-2 tie with a four-run third inning, with Jacobson and Jordyn Kubly collecting run-scoring singles and DeVoe and Alyssa Kubly drawing bases-loaded walks.

"Our bottom of the lineup kept getting on base. That's good to see," Garrison said.

Klossner pitched five innings to earn the victory. She allowed one hit, had three strikeouts and issued two walks.

In the opener, Tayna Smith went 2-for-4 and Jordyn Kubly was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Ponies. Berg had an RBI double.

Klossner went five innings, allowing three runs and two walks while striking out one. Courtney Leuzinger allowed two runs in the sixth to take the loss.

"We lost in a weird way," Garrison said. "We had one big mental mistake and it pretty much cost us the game."
