MONTICELLO - Junior Braden Gafner went 4-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Monticello baseball team to a 9-3 win over Black Hawk on Tuesday.
It was the first win of the season for the Ponies (1-3, 1-0 Six Rivers East).
Monticello junior Travis McCoy pitched a complete game to get the win. He gave up three runs on four hits. McCoy struck out nine and walked just one.
The Ponies pounded out 13 hits.
Monticello coach Scott Smice said he likes the way the Ponies are hitting early in the season. The Ponies' top five hitters went a combined 10-for-19.
"We really haven't had trouble making contact with the ball," Smice said. "That was evident tonight. We still have a ways to go, but most of our kids are making good contact. Our baseball IQ and the mental part of the game is the part of the game we have to work on."
Monticello freshman Travis Krychowiak went 3-for-4, and senior Zach price was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Freshman Kollin Klitzke also went 2-for-4.
Black Hawk's Jayden Stietz started and pitched three innings. The Warriors used four pitchers. Stietz gave up five runs, struck out three, walked two and hit one. Junior Michael Flanagan pitched three shutout innings in relief.
