MONTICELLO - The Six Rivers East champion Ponies held off Juda in the opening round of the WIAA Division 4 volleyball regionals on Tuesday, winning in three sets 25-20, 25-19, 25-21.

"It was closer than we imagined," Monticello coach Teresa Eliason said. "Juda played a great match, and they helped us prepare for Thursday."

C.J. Dilley had 29 assists and Marissa Berg added 14 kills for Monticello. Morgan Kamholz had 16 assists for Juda and Miranda Trotter added 17 digs.

Now the Ponies move on to the second round where they will play Williams Bay Faith Christian.

"We're taking it one match at a time," Eliason said, adding that a potential showdown with state powerhouse Burlington Catholic Central could be a definite possibility in the regional final on Saturday. "We're going to worry about Catholic Central after (Thursday)."

SOUTH WAYNE - The Warriors were taken to the brink of elimination in Tuesday's regional quarterfinal, before rallying to knock off Williams Bay 25-18, 21-25, 27-25, 27-15, 17-15.

"Abby came through big in the first game," Argyle coach Shane Johnson said. "She gave us that big push that we needed."

In the second game, the Orioles again found themselves trailing, this time 20-14. But an 11-1 rally, capped by a kill by Treuthardt and an ace by Ostby, gave Argyle all the momentum it needed.

"We struggled an awful lot on serves in general," said Johnson, whose team is known for its quality serving ability. "We missed 14 serves."

Up next is defending state champion Highland in the Division 4 regional semifinal on Thursday.

"They are a really good team. They are balanced and have a solid program. It should be a fun one to watch from the stands," Johnson said.
