STOUGHTON - The Monroe boys tennis team won its fifth straight match and stayed unbeaten in the Badger South Conference by defeating Stoughton 5-2 in a dual match Monday.

Monroe (5-2, 2-0 Badger South) won three of the four singles matches. At No. 1 singles, Monroe senior David Shon defeated Stoughton junior Ashler McMullin 6-1, 6-2. Monroe sophomore Silas Setterstrom at No. 2 singles defeated Stoughton senior Nathan Lawlor 6-4, 6-3.

"From the start, David did not let his opponent play the style he wanted to," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "David took charge in the match and really dictated the points."

Monroe senior Rhett Katzenberger at No. 4 singles beat Stoughton senior Levi Robbins in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Saugstad said many of the Stoughton singles players were attacking every time the Cheesemakers hit a short shot or a slower paced shot.

"I think our singles guys learned some valuable lessons about needing to keep the ball deeper in the court to give the opponent more difficult shots to hit aggressively."

Monroe seniors Kevin Noriega and Matt Monahan at No. 1 doubles beat Stoughton's Stefan Butterbrodt and Breckin Howser 6-0, 6-3.

"Matt Monahan and Kevin Noreiga were hitting the ball extremely crisply to start the match tonight and cruised in the first set," Saugstad said. "In the second set, we stopped moving our feet quite as well and lost a few games, but Matt and Kevin fixed the problem to finish out the set."

At No. 2 doubles, the Cheesemakers' team of senior Jeremy Miller and sophomore Kody Althaus defeated Stoughton's Conner Merow and Seth Zeichert 6-3, 6-3.

Monroe hosts Oregon today. Oregon made it to the Division 1 state semifinals last year as a team.

"If we want to have a chance to get the win, the boys are going to need to come out mentally and physically sharp," Saugstad said. "Hopefully, we are up to the challenge."
