EAST TROY - The Monroe girls tennis team's season came to an end at the WIAA Division 2 East Troy subsectional and no players will be moving on to the sectional.

"It wasn't our day at subsectionals," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said in an email. "We had some tough draws and didn't play our best. It was disappointing not to play our best at the end of the season. Like much of the season, we had moments where we played well, but we just weren't able to maintain that level of play."

Big Foot's Meredith Heckert defeated Monroe freshman Grace Tostrud at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2 singles, Jefferson's Morgan Graff defeated Monroe junior Maggie Setterstrom 6-3, 6-1. Madison Edgewood's Brita Hovde at No. 3 singles beat Monroe freshman Jensen Christensen 6-0, 6-0. At No. 4 singles, McFarland's Michelle Butcher upended Monroe junior Skye Allen 6-0, 6-1.

Edgewood's No. 1 doubles team of Abby Fox and Maddie Molitor knocked off Monroe juniors Ashley Placek and Hallie Signer 6-0, 6-0. Edgerton's No. 2 doubles team defeated the Cheesemakers' Parris Bunker and Sam Huizenga 6-1, 6-0. Monroe's Kiara Miller and Liz Skatrud at No. 3 doubles lost a match to Big Foot 6-2, 6-1.

"Our season ended today, but a positive is that we won more matches than last year," Saugstad said. "We return nine of 10 varsity players next year and our entire JV team so this program seems to be moving in the right direction."
