MONROE - Monroe senior swimmer Randi Robertson has accepted a scholarship offer from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin (UTPB), a Division II school in Odessa, Texas. Friday afternoon, Robertson signed her letter of intent to attend the college this fall to swim as a member of the Falcons.
"It's so exciting," said Robertson, who found the school on a Google Web search.
"I had Googled D-II swimming schools, ones in the south where it is warmer. I found UTPB and filled out an athlete form. The coach called me and it went from there."
Robertson toured the school in December 2009 and was originally offered an academic scholarship. Later, that offer became an athletic scholarship. Rules surrounding the scholarships dictated that she could only choose one and quickly took the athletic.
"There was more money involved with that one," Robertson said.
Though Texas is more than a Sunday drive from Wisconsin, Robertson won't be too far from family. Her brother, Logan, lives about three hours away in New Mexico.
"It will be fun. (Plus), I fell in love with it down there," Robertson said.
A highly talented swimmer all four years on the Cheesemakers swim team, Robertson had a tough time staying in the water. She had a pair of shoulder surgeries that limited her.
"My coaches and teammates were there for me and helped me. (The coaches) helped me with smart training when I was recovering," Robertson said. "I learned a lot. I'm going to bring it all with."
Robertson's mother, Barb, is the assistant coach for the Cheesemakers. Linda Moser, the head coach, was more than proud to see one of her pupils move on to swim at the next level.
"It feels so good. I was so happy when she called me and told me she was signing," Moser said. "It's alike a dream come true for Randi. She's battled injuries and showed the rest of the girls what determination can do for someone."
