MOUNT HOREB - The Monroe High School baseball team's improbable comeback came up just short and the Cheesemakers lost a nonconference game to Mount Horeb 10-9 on Monday.

It marked the third straight loss for Monroe. The Vikings 10-3 going into the seventh inning. Monroe (10-11) batted around the order and exploded for six runs before the comeback came up short.

The Cheesemakers pounded out 13 hits but committed five errors, and two pitchers combined to walk five batter.

"Any time you get 13 hits you like your chances," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "With five errors and five walks that is too much."

Monroe senior Brent Edmunds led off the seventh with a single. He moved to second base on a balk and third on a wild pitch. Junior Hunter Weckerly was hit by a pitch. Junior Isaac Allen delivered an RBI single to left. With one out, junior Carter Sawdey walked. Junior Cole Murray was hit by a pitch to force in a run to cut the Vikings' lead to 10-5. Monroe senior Garrett Gogin, who went 4-for-4 with four RBI, hit a grand slam to slice the Vikings' lead to 10-9. Senior Jaron Kuester singled to right and then stole second. With the game-tying run at second base, the Vikings struck out Edmunds to end the threat.

The Cheesemakers stranded 12 runners on base.

Mount Horeb had a four-run second inning fueled by a couple of errors. The Vikings then took advantage of two more Cheesemakers errors in the sixth to score five more runs to take a seven-run lead.

"We didn't make enough plays in the second inning," Huffman said. "In the sixth inning, we had a couple errors that led to five runs."

Kuester went 3-for-4 with one RBI, and Edmunds was 2-for-5.

Weckerly pitched five innings and gave up seven runs but just three earned on six hits. He struck out two and walked four.

Gogin pitched one inning in relief and gave up three runs with just one earned run on two hits. Gogin struck out two and walked one.
