MADISON - Monroe seniors Ellie Grossen and Chandra McGuire at No. 1 doubles won their first match at the Madison Edgewood subsectional Monday to qualify for the sectional tournament.

Grossen and McGuire (19-2) are looking to get back to state for the second straight year. The senior duo defeated Whitewater's Erika Levine and Kacie Snyder 6-2, 6-0 to qualify for Wednesday's WIAA Division 2 Whitewater sectional.

"I'm pretty confident they will (qualify for state) if they come out and play good like they have been," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "They should have a winnable match to start the day."

The Cheesemakers went 6-6 in their subsectional matches and five of the sixthey lost came against Madison Edgewood.

"The draw did us no favors today, because in most positions Edgewood is just better than us," Saugstad said. "I'm proud of the fact that in matches against other opponents, we were 6-1."

Monroe senior Allie Coplien defeated Watertown Luther Prep's Kelly Wegmann 6-0, 6-2 and then lost to Edgewood's Emma Sango 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Monroe's Chelsea Miller beat Walworth-Big Foot's Maddie Palmer 7-5, 6-2 and then lost to Edgewood's Maddie Molitor 6-0, 6-0. Eva Priewe at No. 3 singles for the Cheesemakers defeated Edgerton's Aslyn Fier 6-2, 6-2 and then lost to Edgewood's Kate Zellmer 6-3, 6-1. Monroe sophomore Katie Demianiuk at No. 4 singles defeated Watertown Luther Prep's Emily Boyd 6-0, 6-1 and then lost to Edgewood's Brita Hovde 6-1, 6-0.

At No. 2 doubles, Walworth-Big Foot's Hannah Ripkey and Avery Aurand beat Monroe juniors Paige Prien and Erin Gellings 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-3. The Cheesemakers' No. 3 doubles team of Alisa Fager and Amber Jenson beat Whitewater's Grace Tisdale and Izzy Zahn in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 10-7. They then lost to Edgewood 6-1, 6-0.
