MONROE - Sophomore Gabby Ludwig scored three goals and senior Rachel Wellnitz made 16 saves, but the Monroe girls soccer team lost 4-3 to Evansville in a non-conference game Friday at Honey Creek Park.
Ludwig didn't waste any time getting Monroe the lead as she scored at 2:49 off an assist from senior Lily Priewe, then tallied again at 4:03 with an assist from senior Chelsea Haffele to give Monroe (5-7) an early 2-0 advantage.
Evansville answered with goals from at 16:32 and 37:22 to knot the score at 2-2 entering halftime.
The Blue Devils took their first lead in the second half on a goal at 59:52, but Ludwig came through again, this time on an assist from freshman Emily Frankowski at 65:31 to tie the game at 3-3, where it stayed until the end of regulation.
Evansville senior Lauren Sperry scored the game-winner at 7:36 of the extra period.
"It was a very exciting match," said Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill. "Gabby had a great game. It's unfortunate we had to go to overtime and to lose in overtime. It's a tough loss."
