MONROE - The Monroe High School boys 3,200-meter relay team proved it may contend for a gold medal later this year at the WIAA state track and field meet after winning the title in the Simpson Relays.

Sophomores Drake Ingold, Jonah Tostrud, Dylan Scace and senior Thang Lu teamed up to win the race Friday in a time of 8 minutes, 8.60 seconds.

"From what I've seen it's the fastest time in Division 2 this year," Monroe boys track coach Scott Mosher said. "They ran phenomenal."

Scace pulled away on the third leg of the race before Lu ran the anchor leg.

"There was no way they were going to catch Lu," Mosher said.

Monroe Grove captured the Simpson Relays boys team title, edging Stoughton 96.5-92. Oregon finished third (71), just ahead of Monroe (67) in the seven-team relay meet. Darlington took fifth (49).

"In the relays we went after it, we did well in," Mosher said. "We could have been third or second if everything went perfect."

The Cheesemakers' distance medley relay team of Ingold, senior Dominick Curtiss, Tostrud and Scace won the race in 11:15.32. The Cheesemakers finish was about 8 seconds ahead of Stoughton. The relay started with Ingold running 1,200 meters followed by Curtiss running the 400, Tostrud the 800 and Scace the 1,600. Scace ran a personal-best 4:46 mile in the relay and also ran a PR in the 800 (2:02) of the 3,200 relay.

"Dylan had a great meet, and he wasn't even pushed," Mosher said. "He ran that 4:46 by himself."

Darlington won the high jump with a combined clearance of 16 feet, 10 inches. Darlington junior Trevor Johnson jumped 5-10 and teamed with Mitchell Wagner and Tanner Evenstad. The Redbirds took second in the 800 medley relay (1:43.69).

The Cheesemakers hurdle shuttle relay team of Trevor Aebly, D.J. Gersbach and Tyler Sobacki took second (52.66).

With just two pole vaulters, Monroe tied Darlington for second, clearing 21 feet. Monroe senior Mitch Keith cleared 12 feet and junior Atticus Pond cleared 9-0.

Monroe sophomore Bray-den Zettle, senior Cam Shaw and junior Jake Kind finished third in the triple jump with at 113-101⁄4. Zettle had a team-best jump of 41-1⁄2.

"He's picking up where he left off last year," Mosher said.

Shaw and Kind teamed with Kendall Paulson and Jordan Montgomery to take third in the 400 relay (45.58).
