NEW GLARUS - The Monroe wrestling team crowned three champions and each of its 11 wrestlers placed to win the Raider Scramble championship Saturday.
Despite missing wrestlers at three weight classes, the Cheesemakers captured the team title 188-185.5 over Brodhead-Juda. Evansville-Albany finished third (153) and Sugar River took fifth (109.5) out of six teams.
"It was a great overall team effort," Monroe coach Tom Witt said. "It was a heck of a day by all of them."
The three champions for Monroe were seniors Cole Murray (138 pounds), Hayden Arneson (195) and Kyle Walter (heavyweight).
Brodhead-Juda also had a banner day with five champions including Russell Waeffler (113), Jackson Hauri (132), Khaleb Erb (145), Nick Naramoire and Tyler Hoesly (182).
Walter went 5-0 with four pins. Walter's 5-2 win over Cuba City-Southwestern's Aaron McCarthy sealed the team title for the Cheesemakers.
Walter had to beat McCarthy last year at the sectional to qualify for state.
"If Kyle didn't win that match, we would have got second," Witt said. "Hopefully, it pays off as we move forward. He (Walter) could potentially see him (McCarthy) three more times at Bi-State, at our tournament and probably at the sectional."
Murray (138) went 5-0 and posted four pins. He pinned Sugar River's John Chenoweth in the championship match in 2 minutes, 47 seconds.
Hayden Arneson (195) also went 5-0 and had four pins.
The Cheesemakers had four wrestlers finish second including junior David Andrews (120), freshman Patrick Rielly (152), junior Dempzy Foley (170) and senior Isaac Allen (182). Andrews, Foley and Allen each went 4-1 on the day and Rielly finished 3-2.
Andrews led Evansville-Albany's Adam Staver 15-9 going into the third period of the title match. Staver stormed back and edged Andrews 12-11.
Rielly posted two pins and then was pinned by Dodgeville's John Phelan in 52 seconds. After beating Evansville-Albany's Tyler Aasen 6-4, Rielly got a second match in the final against Phelan. In the title match, Phelan pinned him in 4:30. Foley's only loss came to Dodgeville's Joey Recob who pinned him in 23 seconds.
Brodhead-Juda's Tyler Hoesly pinned Allen to win the title at 182.
A trio of Monroe wrestlers placed third including sophomore Gabe Witt (113), freshman Alex Witt (132) and freshman Bodie Minder (220).
Gabe Witt pinned Durand-Pecatonica's Josh Maniella in 1:10 in a third-place match. Alex Witt lost a championship match to Brodhead-Juda's Jackson Hauri 8-1. Hauri was a state champion last year at that weight. Alex then trailed 4-1 in the third period and came back to beat Evansville-Albany's Hunter Georgeson's 8-5 in a third-place match.
"It was some gutty wrestling by Alex," Tom Witt said. "Those points all matter."
Minder went 3-2 at 220 and pinned Evansville-Albany's Jacob Shotif in 1 minute to take third.
"It's not easy being at that weight and wrestling as a freshman," Witt said of Minder.
For Brodhead-Juda, Waeffler (113), Hauri (132), Erb (145) and Hoesly (182) each went 5-0 to capture titles. Waeffler defeated Dodgeville's Max Miller 6-0 in the championship match.
Hauri defeated Sauk Prairie's Adam Hape in a technical fall, 15-0 in 5 minutes for the title. Erb pinned Sugar River's Jack Diederich in 3:23 for the championship. Naramore beat Cuba City-Southwestern's Abe Meier 10-3 in the title match.
Erb had four pins for the Cardinals, while Waeffler, Hauri and Hoesly each posted three pins.
Brodhead-Juda's Nick Hack (195) finished second and Jayson Starr (106) and Blake Burns (138) each took third.
Sugar River's John Chenoweth (138), Diederich (145) and Trent Siegenthaler (220) each took second going 4-1. Teammates Robert Chenoweth (120), Justin Knoebl (126) each finished third.
Diederich and Siegenthaler each had three pins for the Raiders. Siegenthaler pinned Cuba City-Southwestern's Logan Murphy in 3:50 en route to a second-place finish.
Both Robert Chenoweth and Knoebl went 3-2 to take third. Robert Chenoweth defeated Durand-Pecatonica's Kamren Suppeland 5-0 and Knoebl defeated Brodhead-Juda's Theodore Policastro 11-6 in third-place matches.
Monroe junior Travis Wolf (145) is still recovering from a broken arm during football and he went 3-2 to take fifth. Wolf defeated Cesar Hernandez 12-7 for fifth place.
"He's still not in wrestling shape yet," Witt said of Wolf.
