MAZOMANIE - The Monroe volleyball team finished sixth place at the eight-team Wis-consin Heights Invitational Sat-urday.

Monroe (8-22, 0-6 Badger South) finished the invite 2-3. Sauk Prairie defeated Monroe 25-22, 25-22 in pool play. The Cheesemakers, in their other two pool play matches, beat Boscobel 25-19, 20-25, 15-11 and lost to Southwestern 15-25, 12-25.

"Once again the girls played very scrappy," Monroe coach Heidi Witt said. "Most of matches were close and consisted of some long volleys. We got caught on tips quite a few times throughout the day but the girls still dug deep to keep the games close.

"It was a long day for everyone and tiredness may have gotten the best of us in our third match against a beatable Southwestern team," Witt said. "But we came back in the playoffs to finish our day pretty strong."

In the tournament bracket play, the Cheesemakers defeated Plainfield-Tri County 24-26, 25-17, 15-12 and then lost to Riverdale in three sets. Riverdale won the first set 25-18 before the Cheesemakers came back to win the second set 25-20. Riverdale escaped winning the decisive third set 16-14.

Monroe junior Paige Murphy who had 17 aces in the invite and racked up 62 assists. Monroe senior Kari Jordan had a team-high 24 kills and Alicia Kuester had 23 kills. Junior Hannah Vetterli added 15 kills and a team-high nine digs.

Monroe sophomore Hannah Neuenschwander had 42 assists and eight aces.

"The setters did a great job getting the sets to where our hitters needed them and the hitters found ways to put it down," Witt said.

Both sophomore Chloe Schroeder and Kuester each had two blocks.
