Monroe upends Evansville

EVANSVILLE - The Monroe wrestling team, in a tune-up before a couple big Badger South Conference dual meets, edged Evansville-Albany 36-30 Tuesday night.

"It's a tough stretch this week," Monroe coach Jeriamy Jackson said with a dual meet coming up against Fort Atkinson Thursday.

The win over Evansville-Albany comes on the heels of the Bi-State Classic in La Crosse. Several of Monroe's younger wrestlers didn't compete at La Crosse so Tuesday's meet was their first action since Christmas break.

"They were a little rusty," Jackson said.

Monroe sophomore Jesse Keizer, at 112 pounds, pinned Evansville-Albany's Robert Crull in 3 minutes, 49 seconds. Fellow sophomore Kevin Klopfenstein (125) defeated Alex Lange in a technical fall 15-0 in 4:51.

Monroe junior Cody Stamm (140) defeated Sean Wiedel 7-5 and senior Dylan Schwitz (152) won a major decision over Luke Gunn 14-0.

Monroe freshman Ryan Hughes (160) defeated Dalton Sendelbach 7-4. Junior Troy Hawkinson (171) defeated Evan Benedict 6-0 and sophomore Trevor Gorr (215) pinned Ben Reed in 5:35.

Evansville-Albany's J.J. Boley (119) pinned Aaron Hesgard in 3:47. Evansville-Albany also received wins from Hayden Milz (130), Tom Bjugstad (145) and Alex Yoerger (189).

Jackson is looking forward to the Cheesemakers' match against Fort Atkinson. The Blackhawks lost a match earlier this year to Stoughton 31-29.

"This will be a tough one," he said. "This is their year with all of the seniors. If everything goes right, we will have a chance to win it."
