MONROE - The Monroe baseball team dropped two hard-fought games to Milton in a doubleheader Friday, May 10.

The Cheesemakers lost the first game by a score of 6-3 and fell in the second game 12-6.

In the first game, the story for Monroe was their improvement in the field, as they committed zero errors.

"First game was first time all year we made it through without making an error," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "We competed, we had a lead twice. They got ahead 3-2 and Logan (Weckerly) left one up and they hit a home run."

The home run came off the bat of Milton's Connor Bowen. Monroe also had a home run in the game courtesy of Ryan Hughes, who clubbed his second homer of the year.

"(Ryan's) swinging a hot bat," Huffman said.

Monroe's improvements in the field evaporated quickly in game two, as the Cheesemakers committed seven errors. Huffman said he wasn't really sure what happened between the first and second games, fielding wise.

"That's the million dollar question," he said. "We had some guys get hurt in the first game. We had some other guys in some positions. More or less a concentration thing, a confidence thing. Gotta be confident in their abilities to make a play when they're put in the game. Hopefully they can learn from those mistakes."

One bright spot in game two for the Cheese was the third inning, when Monroe scored five runs.

"They brought in a pitcher. He was a little bit wild," Huffman said. "We were able to get some walks. We didn't get a big double or something, just kept putting the ball in play."

Monroe (1-13, 0-7 Badger South) plays at Parkview Saturday, May 11.

BLOOMINGTON - The Black Hawk baseball team traveled to River Ridge for a doubleheader Friday night. The Warriors were swept by the Timberwolves, 6-2 and 7-6.

River Ridge got off to a quick start in the first game, scoring four runs in the first.

"In the first inning, we had a few errors. They hit the crap out of the ball," said Black Hawk coach Jeff Solberg. "They had three hits in the first inning and we had two errors."

In game two, Black Hawk trailed 4-2 after four innings before scoring four in the top of the fifth to take a 6-4 lead. River Ridge responded with three of their own in the bottom half of the inning to steal the win.

Highland 7, Pecatonica 1

HIGHLAND - A few inches made the difference in Pecatonica's 7-1 loss to Highland Friday night.

Going into the bottom of the fifth, Pecatonica trailed 1-0. After getting the first out, Pec starter Lucas McKeon gave up a pair of singles, which, after a throw to third, turned into runners on second and third with one out. Highland then executed a squeeze play which scored both runners after an error on the play. Highland then picked up three two-out doubles and two more walks to round out their six-run fifth inning. Pecatonica coach Jim Strommen said a matter of a few inches made all the difference.

Pec scored their lone run in the seventh. Jacob Scoville and Kyle Kleppe both finished 2-for-3 to lead the Vikings against Highland starter Nick Pierick.

Pecatonica (5-8, 4-7 Six Rivers East) plays Cassville at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11.

Cassville 7, Argyle 1

CASSVILLE - Early walks and long counts proved costly later in the game, as Cassville put seven runs on the board in the final three innings to defeat Argyle Friday, May 10.

The Orioles opened the scoring in the first inning, after Alec Treuthardt drew a walk, stole second, was sacrificed to third and scored on a squeeze bunt by Kyle Olson.

However, the rest of the game was all Cassville.

Treuthardt, who also started on the bump for the Oriole, labored early.

"He got behind in counts and walked those guys early ... and those pitches add up," Argyle coach Chuck Bredeson said. "We go into the fourth inning, and he's already thrown a pile of pitches. And when you get behind in the count, they know that fastball's coming."

Cassville jumped on Treuthardt in the fourth inning, putting three runs on the board. They also added four in the sixth to put the game away.

The Argyle offense was held to just one hit in the game. Bredeson said Cassville starter Cam Jensen was in control from the get-go, and he continued to attack later in the game.

Brock Bruehlman had Argyle's only hit, notching a single in the third inning.

Friday's game began a stretch of six games in eight days for the Orioles.

Argyle (7-4, 6-4 Six Rivers East) will host Highland at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11.
