ELKHORN - The Elks chose to play a 2-3 zone and Monroe made them pay.
The Cheesemakers (4-3, 0-1 Badger South) hit seven 3-pointers en route to a 43-27 win over Elkhorn Tuesday.
Monroe led 19-15 at halftime, but broke the game open in the second half. The Cheesemakers went on an 8-0 run in the third quarter and outscored the Elks 24-12 in the second half.
"We talked before the game that we want to take the next step," said Monroe coach Sam Mathiason, whose team has a game coming up Friday against Badger South unbeaten Milton.
Monroe senior Kylee Ritschard scored a team-high 12 points and senior Kyleigh Sellnow hit two 3-pointers and scored nine total points. Senior Abby Jacobson scored eight points and senior Kristin McArdle added seven. Jacobson and McArdle each made two 3-pointers.
"We got off to a fast start in the third quarter," Mathiason said. "We did a good job of controlling the ball at the end and when we got some opportunities we were able to convert."
Mathiason was also excited with the Cheesemakers' defensive play.
"We know that is what we have to hang our laurels on," he said.
