OREGON - In a dual meet that had no effect on the hunt for a conference title, the Monroe girls and boys track teams sat some key members and came out on the losing end to Oregon, the girls by a score of 91-53, and the boys 77-65.
On the girls side, the Cheesemakers were victorious in seven events. The 400 relay of Jess Jackson, Tre Voegli, Lauren Werth, and Mafer Larraga won with a time of 53.28 seconds. The Cheesemakers' 800 relay composed of Abby Oudinot, Georgie Myers, Mary Kelly and Lizzy Dale also took first (1:55.84). Isabel Bazley won the 200 with a time of 29.59 seconds, and Jess Jackson won the 100 with a time of 13.12 seconds.
In the field, Tre Voegli won the pole vault at 10 feet, Tabitha Egli won the shot put (32 feet, 32.5 inches) and Georgie Myers won the high jump (4 feet, 10 inches).
Bazley's win in the 200 was her first time running the event in a meet. Monroe girls coach Doug Miller said he likes what he's been seeing from the freshman.
"She's been running the 400 and 800," Miller said. "We're starting to bring her down. She's a freshman and she's showing some speed that will make her competitive in those sprint relays. We have a log jam of 8 or 9 that could step in there. It's a good problem to have at this point."
The next meet for the Cheesemakers is at the Pirate Invitational in Waterloo on Thursday. Miller said the coaching staff is looking to keep seeing improvement from the relays.
"We're pushing those sprint relays," he said. "We'd like to see some improvement. Maybe change things up a little bit. Our sprinters are running pretty well. It'd be nice to keep that rolling."
On the boys side, the Cheesemakers held out several key members but got solid contribution from a number of different athletes.
The Monroe 800 relay team of Dakota Phillips, Seth Calaway, Alex Barenklau and Forrest Klug-Hanson finished first with a time of 1 minute, 33.17 seconds.
"They beat a really good Oregon team, which was nice to see," Monroe boys coach Curt Miller said.
Both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter relays also won for Monroe, with respective times of 3 minutes, 38.8 seconds and 8:37.7.
"We had some alternative guys in there," Curt Miller said. "They still ran tough."
Senior A.J. Cifuentes was a member of the 1,600 and 3,200 relays, and he won the 400 in 54.3 seconds.
"A.J. ran a nice leg in the 4x8. Him and Noah Tostrud battled it out in the open 400," Curt Miller said. "We needed an alternate in the 4x8 and he was excited about his day and he was willing to do it. A.J. was anchoring one team and Ethan Moehn was anchoring the other. A.J. knew he was coming, but he ran a great time and held him off. He had a really nice day."
Miller also praised the performance of sophomore Cody Faust.
"He was on the 4x8 team that won. He was also on one of the 4x4 teams and ran a great split," Curt Miller said. "He scored in four events at Wisconsin Heights (last week). He's a kid that has really stepped up and worked very hard."
Miller said the Cheesemakers would not be going all out at the Waterloo Invite.
"We're gonna treat it kinda similar to today," he said. "We're going to put some kids in position to score points. It's my home town and (Doug Miller) is excited about bringing his crew over there to a place he worked for many years. We always get excellent times there. We should have a really good day."
