MONROE - The Monroe boys basketball team was awarded a No. 7 seed Sunday and will host 10th-seeded Sauk Prairie in the first round of regionals on Tuesday, Feb. 28.

The Cheesemakers (8-13, 3-9 Badger South), who have lost six straight, will face a Sauk Prairie team (6-15, 2-9 Badger North) that currently has a four-game losing streak.

"The seventh seed is about where we thought we belonged," Monroe coach Pat Murphy said. "(Monona Grove) got the sixth seed and they have an identical (overall) record and beat us twice head-to-head."

The Cheesemakers finish the regular season at Baraboo on Thursday, one last chance for Murphy and Co. to get on track.

The Cheesemakers had a week you don't see often last week, when they were outscored 28-1 in the fourth quarter of a loss at Milton, then rallied from a 21-point second-half deficit to pull with one point before losing at home to Madison Edgewood.

"Tuesday we couldn't do anything in the fourth quarter, then we put (Edgewood) on their heels," Murphy said. "You'd rather have things more figured out at this time of the year, but you do the best you can and play fearless and see what happens."

A victory against Sauk Prairie would move the Cheesemakers into the regional semifinals at No. 2 seed DeForest on Friday, March 2.

Brodhead and Darlington snagged the area's top seeds, each with a No. 3 in Division 3 and Division 4, respectively.
