OREGON - After losing to both Monona Grove (6-8, 4-3 Badger South) and Madison Edgewood (8-4, 6-2) earlier in the week by a total of 27-9, Monroe coach Dustin Huffman was more than pleased to knock off Oregon (5-12, 2-5) in eight innings.
"It was a big win, especially after what happened to us earlier in the week," Huffman said.
Dylan Schwitz led off the eighth with a single and immediately stole second base. Mitch Riese then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Schwitz to third and Kramer Henning drove in the run with a sac fly.
"We played a little small ball," Huffman said. "We manufactured a run and then Mitch Marty came in and pitched a perfect eighth to send us home with the win."
Monroe (7-7, 5-4) nearly went home with a loss. The Cheesemakers tied the game at 1 in the top of the fourth inning, but had a 4-1 lead headed into the bottom of the seventh. Starter Logan Wells was roughed up early in the frame and had to be replaced by Marty, who battled to outs despite having the bases loaded.
"He did a great job. We easily could have gone home with another tough loss, but he battled and kept us alive," Huffman said of Marty.
Wells allowed four hits, five walks and three earned runs in six innings. He also struck out seven.
"Wells pitched really well. He didn't make many mistakes and located his fastball well. He keeps us in games long enough for our bats to score some runs. If he can keep this up and continue to give us six innings, that would be great," Huffman said.
Schwitz was 3 for 4 at the plate with two runs, and Henning was 3 for 3 with a double and three RBIs. Michael Turek was the only other Cheesemaker with multiple hits. He finished 2 for 4 with a run.
The Cheesemakers get right back into action today with a doubleheader just down the road in Brodhead. Huffman said Drew Nafzger will keep his turn in the rotation and throw the first game, and Jared Weber will start the second with Dylan Cleaveland available in relief. Monroe's No. 1 and No. 2 pitchers, Wells and Mitch Marty, pitched to more than their share of batters through a heavy week of conference play.
