PRAIRIE DU SAC - Freshman Aaron Ziolkowski scored two goals, and the Monroe High School boys soccer team tied Sauk Prairie 3-3 in a nonconference game Tuesday night.
Sauk Prairie jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Monroe (2-2-1) battled back and tied the game on senior Atticus Pond's free kick which sophomore Nick Schumacher touched and then used a bicycle kick to score the game-tying goal with 9 seconds to go.
"They (Sauk Prairie) have most of its scoring back from last year, and we knew they would be a good team," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said. "They are really fast and physical. They will probably go deep in the playoffs this year. They played the best game I have seen a Monroe team play since I have coached at Monroe. It was the most exciting tie I have ever been a part of as a coach. This should show that we can compete with anybody, especially in Division 3."
Ziolkowski scored the first goal on an assist from Schumacher at 47 minutes, 15 seconds to cut the Eagles' lead to 2-1. Ziolkowski scored his second goal at 83:23 to cut the Eagles' lead to 3-2. That set the stage for Schumacher and Pond's heroics.
Monroe sophomore goalkeeper Devan Schulte had 15 saves.
"Devan played the game of his life," Vasquez said.
