REEDSBURG - The Monroe boys tennis team won all four singles matches to roll to a 6-1 win over Reedsburg in a non-conference dual match Tuesday.

"I'm always worried with a long bus ride that we will come out flat as a team, but the boys did a nice job of coming off the bus ready to play," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "The good start was key for us."

Monroe senior David Shon at No. 1 singles defeated Reedsburg senior Derek Webber 6-2, 6-3. Monroe sophomore Silas Setterstrom at No. 2 singles defeated Reedsburg junior Ryan Dregney 6-2, 6-2 and Monroe senior Zach Hendrickson at No. 3 singles beat Logan Penkwitz 6-4, 6-2. At No. 4 singles, Monroe senior Rhett Katzenberger defeated Reedsburg senior Ralph Romero 6-2, 6-3.

"Last season, he (Setterstrom) relied on consistency, but he worked hard in the offseason to add an aggressive side to his game," Saugstad said. "Silas came to the net and hit many aggressive shots and controlled the match."

Katzenberger picked up his first varsity win.

"Rhett did a nice job of displaying patience and playing with consistency," he said.

The Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles team of seniors Matt Monahan and Kevin Noriega defeated the Beavers' Zach Clisch and Austin Colvin 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2 doubles, senior Jeremy Miller and sophomore Kody Althaus defeated Reedsburg's Matt Pfaff and Joe Mayer 6-3, 6-4.

"Jeremy and Kody were off on the placement of their shots tonight and were having to battle," Saugstad said. "They left too many balls at the net or were just too wide on some shots. Every tennis player goes through stretches where they are not hitting the ball like they want to, but good players can fight through it and still come out with the win."

Monroe will host Jefferson Thursday.

"This is going to be an important match because Jefferson is in our subsectional and we don't play many teams from our subsectional," Saugstad said. "This will have some major seeding implications for later in the season."
