MONROE - After a slow start to the Monroe Quad, the Cheesemakers soccer team had a talk at the half about converting on its shots on goal.
Monroe (4-3-2) responded, scoring three second-half goals to beat Columbus 3-0 Saturday. Monroe junior Maddie Kallgren scored two goals and had one assist. The Cheesemakers lost the championship game to Kaneland, Ill. 1-0.
"The girls talked at halftime about how they could score goals against Columbus," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "The girls in the first half were not communicating and were very disconnected. They were really fired up for the second half."
Monroe junior Shannon Robotski scored the first goal on an assist from Kallgren at 33 minutes, 29 seconds. Kallgren scored her first goal at 42:19 on an assist from senior Emily Frankowski to give the Cheesemakers a 2-0 lead.
Kallgren scored her second goal on a pass from freshman Morgan Seffrood at 48:29. Monroe freshman goalkeeper Reily Pond had four saves.
In the title game against Kaneland, Monroe dropped a battle 1-0. Kaneland's Kiandra Powell scored the lone goal on an assist from Courtney Diddell at 22:12.
Pond had seven saves.
Monroe senior goalie Gwendolyn Ambrose missed the tournament due to a concussion. Ambrose has now missed six games.
Reedsburg defeated Columbus in a shootout 3-2 in the runner-up bracket.
O'Neill liked the way the Cheesemakers battled in the championship game.
"What you want in any tournament is a well played and competitive championship game," O'Neill said. "We can't be disappointed with a 1-0 result with a close and exciting match."
With Ambrose out, O'Neill has liked the way Pond has stepped into a role as goalkeeper.
"She has contributed a tremendous amount as keeper," O'Neill said. "She's very good at organizing and communicating to the defense."
Monroe will play at Wisconsin Heights today and will play at Big Foot Tuesday. The Cheesemakers will open up the Badger Conference season when they at No. 2 state ranked Oregon Thursday.
"I think we have played some tough games that will hopefully prepare us for tough conference games," O'Neill said. "Oregon is a tremendous power this year. No matter the result, I know it will be a really good experience."
