MONROE - The Monroe High School volleyball team went 2-3 and placed fourth in the six-team Monroe Invitational on Saturday.

Mount Horeb went 5-0 to capture the team title. New Glarus went 0-5 and placed last.

The Vikings beat the Cheesemakers 25-15, 25-20. Monroe knocked off Wisconsin Heights 25-17, 26-24, and defeated New Glarus 25-16, 25-21. Watertown Luther Prep rolled to a 25-12, 25-13 win over the Cheesemakers, and Verona defeated Monroe 25-13, 25-19.

"Monroe did some good things throughout the day, but I felt our energy level could have stepped up a few notches," Monroe coach Heidi Witt said. "There were times where it looked like the girls were just going through the motions. When good things did happen, the girls just didn't get as excited as maybe they should. Good energy and emotion is something you need consistently on the court to keep yourself in the game, winning or losing."

Monroe senior Sydney Mathiason had a team-high 23 kills, eight blocks and 20 digs for the invitational. Mathiason was named to the six-player all-tournament team.

"The other teams took notice that she deserves that recognition," Witt said.

Witt said if Monroe would not have started out against a top-notch team like Mount Horeb, the other four matches in the invitational may have gone differently.

"Their sophomore middle hitter, Elise Goetzinger, is 6-4 and legit," Witt said. "She was rather fun to watch. Beating Wisconsin Heights was great. We haven't beat them at our home invite for many, many years. Heights is always a good team and to be able to compete with them on our home court was an accomplishment."

Monroe freshman Zoee Pond had 10 kills, a team-high three aces and eight digs on the day. Sophomore Cassi Gersbach posted eight kills and had nine blocks. Senior Alexis Allen had a team-best 23 assists and eight digs. Senior Alysha Witt had 18 assists and Hailey Betthauser had 15 digs.

Wisconsin Heights beat New Glarus 25-18, 25-16. Watertown Luther Prep knocked off the Glarner Knights 25-16, 25-9. Verona topped the Knights 25-12, 25-8 and Mount Horeb rolled to a 25-10, 25-8 win over New Glarus.

New Glarus senior Willow Lee had a team-high 10 kills and 22 digs. Senior Julia Barnaby racked up eight kills and had a team-best 11 blocks. Senior Riley Parker had 16 assists and Jada Malaise notched three aces.
