MOUNT HOREB - The Monroe girls soccer team continued its hot play Saturday, as sophomore Abbey Schneider scored the game-winning goal to lift the Cheesemakers to a 2-1 win over Mount Horeb. Monroe (4-2-2, 0-2-1 Badger South) has won four straight games.
Monroe sophomore Kylee Ritschard gave the Cheesemakers a 1-0 lead by scoring an unassisted goal at 3 minutes, 23 seconds.
Mount Horeb's Julie Boyden scored a game-tying goal at 26:54.
Schneider scored the game-winning goal at 72:26 to extend the Cheesemakers' winning streak against a Badger North rival. Monroe senior goalkeeper Niamh O'Neill-Culhane had four saves.
Monroe has scored 21 goals in its first eight games after scoring 23 goals during the entire season last year.
"I think our midfielders and offense are really coming together," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "I think we were all expecting this game against Mount Horeb would be our toughest game. It was just pure determination that won the game.
"Our defense was just magnificent against Mount Horeb," O'Neill said. "I have to give credit to Pam Lehman, Molly Hlubek, Abby Hlubek and Alyssa Studer. They didn't give up on the game."
