WATERTOWN - The Monroe girls basketball team got hot from 3-point range and used a big second half run to knock off Watertown 51-33 Tuesday.
Monroe (5-1, 3-0 Badger South), ranked third in the WisSports.net Division 2 Coaches Poll, led by just four points at the half, 23-19. The Goslings used a 1-3-1 zone implemented by coach Matt Stollberg, who coached at Fort Atkinson for four years before moving to Watertown.
"He has a really good feel for the conference and our players," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said of Stollberg. "They do a good job with their zone."
The Cheesemakers opened the second half on a 13-0 run sparked by sophomore Grace Tostrud's two 3-pointers and senior Sydney Mathiason's 3.
"I thought in the first half our defense was just a little sluggish," Mathiason said. "It wasn't bad. We only gave up 19 points, but I think in the second half I think the kids did a better job of challenging shots and rebounding. We didn't give them the second-chance opportunities."
Monroe junior Sydney Hilliard scored a game-high 23 points and drilled three 3-pointers. Mathiason and Tostrud each added 9 points.
Watertown's Lauren Burd scored a team-high 11 points and Jenna Koepp added 9 points.
"I'm really proud of the effort from the kids," Mathiason said.
