MONROE - Brooke Adams scored a team-high 14 points and hit two 3-pointers to help a Monroe girls basketball team clicking on all cylinders cruise to a 67-27 win over Elkhorn on Saturday.
Monroe (3-4, 1-2 Badger South) used a 33-7 run in the first half to set the tone. Monroe freshman Sydney Hilliard scored 12 points and freshman Emily Benzschawel added 11 points. Sophomore Sydney Mathiason scored nine points and junior Jordan Hirsbrunner chipped in seven points. All of Monroe's players saw time on the court and 10 different players scored.
"We really passed and moved the ball looking for open teammates," Adams said. "We played together. That is what it's about; being unselfish all the time. We have all been working on our shooting. If one of us comes out and hits a couple of shots we feed off of that energy and we can all do good."
Three of Monroe's first six games were against teams ranked in the top 10 in the state including Madison Edgewood (ranked No. 1 in Division 3), Beaver Dam (No. 5 in Division 2) and Brodhead No. 8 in Division 2). Monroe will play at Stoughton, ranked No. 7 in Division 2 on Thursday and will play at Verona Dec. 29 against the Wildcats, which are ranked No. 3 in Division 1.
"It will be a big challenge," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said of playing Stoughton. "We have played with and competed against some teams. Now, we just have to compete with them for the whole 36 minutes and be more consistent. We just have to keep working to get better."
