MONROE - Senior Maddie Kallgren scored one goal and had two assists to power the Monroe girls soccer team to a 3-0 win over Beloit Memorial Monday at Honey Creek Park.

Monroe (8-7-2, 1-3 Badger South) scored two goals in the first half going with the wind. Kallgren put the Cheesemakers on the board scoring a goal on a direct kick at 28 minutes, 22 seconds.

"Maddie works tremendously hard on the field and in practice," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "She plays midfield and forward. Regardless of what position she is in, she is scoring or assisting on a goal. She has made huge contributions to our team."

Monroe freshman Reily Pond scored a goal on an assist from Kallgren at 34:28 to give the Cheesemakers a 2-0 lead at the half.

"It was Parents' Night," O'Neill said. "The girls wanted to give their parents a good game. I think after the first two goals in the first half we were just able to settle in to the second half. It's good for team morale to win a game like this."

Monroe senior goalkeeper Gwendolyn Ambrose had four saves in the first half and Pond had seven saves in the second half. The Cheesemakers have used both goalies since Ambrose returned from injury.

"Often times it turns out that one goalie will make a push and play for the playoffs," O'Neill said. "We like to play two so they get a chance on the field as well. It has worked so far for us. It's really ideal to get them on the field and in goal."

Monroe is looking to get to .500 in the Badger South Conference. Monroe plays at Stoughton Thursday and has a key home game against Fort Atkinson May 28.

"I think they are teams that we can be competitive with," O'Neill said. "We have played a tough schedule. I think it pays off to play those tough games where you get stronger as a team. I think in the last few games we have come together."
