Monroe struggles at conference tourney

OREGON - The Monroe volleyball team dropped two matches and finished eighth at the Badger Conference tournament Saturday.

Top-seeded and eventual tournament champion Watertown rolled past the eighth-seeded Cheesemakers in the first match 25-6, 25-16. Oregon then topped Monroe 25-20, 25-11.

Monroe senior Sydney Mathiason had six kills, two blocks and five digs in the two matches. Sophomore Cassi Gersbach racked up five kills and two blocks.

Monroe senior Alexis Allen dished out a team-high 12 assists and had a team-best two aces. Senior teammate Alysha Witt had 10 assists and notched a team-high seven digs. Senior Meredith Hose and junior Hailey Betthauser each collected five digs.

The regional seeding meeting is Wednesday. Monroe hosts Portage Thursday and regional play begins Oct. 17.



Brodhead goes 3-2 at Elkhorn

ELKHORN - The Brodhead volleyball team went 3-2 at the Elkhorn tournament Saturday.

Brodhead beat Marshall 25-20, 25-20, topped Elkhorn 25-10, 25-14 and defeated Faith Christian 25-19, 25-9. The Cardinals lost matches to Indian Trail in three sets 25-23, 17-25, 15-9 and lost to Janesville Parker in three sets 25-22, 21-25, 15-11.

Brodhead junior Abbey Johnson piled up 31 kills, 62 assists, 31 digs and 10 aces. Senior teammate Chandra Clark had a team-high 35 kills. She added 40 assists and 27 digs in the tournament. Brodhead's Brooke Bescup had a team-best 56 digs and senior Erin Nyhus had 48 digs. Sophomore Katie Goecks had 20 kills and 11 blocks.
