STOUGHTON - The Monroe girls tennis team will enter the Badger Conference tennis tournament with some momentum after beating Stoughton 7-0, Monday.

The win for Monroe (11-4, 4-2 Badger South) snaps a two-match losing streak to Fort Atkinson and Madison Edgewood.

Monroe junior Kristin McArdle defeated Amanda Ramos, 6-0, 7-6 (5). At No. 2 singles, Monroe sophomore Ellie Shuda defeated Katie Evans, 6-1, 6-0.

"Winning that first set is important," Monroe coach Stephanie Miller said. "It's nice to see them win those close matches. That is what it will take at conference. You will not be given the close matches. You will have to work hard for them."

Monroe senior Kiera Berger at No. 3 singles won a three set match over Ericka Kind, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Sophomore Alyssa Quinn at No. 4 singles defeated Shannon Grady, 6-1, 6-0.

Monroe senior Ashley Hermanson and junior Kelsey Erickson at No. 1 doubles beat Stoughton's Nicole Roloff and Bree Valenza, 6-1, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, seniors Gwen Sutter and Emily Grossen defeated Jordan Vieth and Catherine Ulrich 7-6(6), 6-1. Fellow seniors Taylor Weis and McKenzie Bruce defeated Kristin Knapton and Via Bauer, 6-2, 6-1.

The Cheesemakers will play at the conference tournament Thursday and Friday at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

"I felt they really needed those two close matches before the conference," Miller said of Fort Atkinson and Edgewood. "Those close matches help them get some perspective of what matches at conference will be like."
