WHITEWATER - The Monroe boys track team got off to a strong start with three top-two finishes at the Nelson Daniels Classic at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Friday night.
Monroe sophomore Jake Hirsbrunner won the high jump after clearing 6 feet.
Fellow sophomore Ethan Moehn took second in the 1,600 meters with a personal record time of 4 minutes, 36.94 seconds.
"It was an amazing race for him," Monroe track coach Curt Miller said. "The guys had some great performances on the track tonight."
The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team of Luke Peterson, Peyton Hoesly, Steve Christiansen and Cody Oudinot finished second with a time of 8:42.45.
Monroe junior Alex Barenklau took fourth in the 400 (52.65) and Matt Bush finished fourth in the 800 (2:04.82).
"We really have some depth in the middle distances," Miller said.
On the girls side, Maria Eberle finished sixth in the 55-meter dash (7.79).
"There are 30 teams here and it's the best sprinters from each team," Miller said. "It's a great time."
Eberle teamed with McKenzie Hesgard, Mafer Larraga and Jess Jackson to take eighth place in the 800 relay with a time of 1:58.99. Senior Maria Pecora finished eighth in the pole vault (8-0).
