MONROE - Becca Armstrong and Samantha Solberg turned in dazzling pitching performances to help the Cheesemakers sweep a doubleheader against Waunakee Thursday, April 25.

Armstrong tossed a three-hit shutout to lead the Cheesemakers to a 4-0 win in the first game. In the nightcap, Solberg pitched six innings and gave up just one run on seven hits. She struck out seven and walked two. Armstrong pitched two shutout innings in relief in the second game to get the win.

"These five games in three days are kind of like a tune-up and a chance to get better before we play a string of eight straight conference games," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said. "(Armstrong) may have pitched her best game of the year. She was in command. She had her rise ball and changeup working to keep hitters off-balance. Our pitching was about as good as it has been all year and our defense was solid. We are not hitting on all cylinders on offense yet."

Armstrong kept Waunakee's Allie Taylor, a University of Wisconsin-Green Bay recruit, hitless in the first game. Taylor went 4-for-4 in the second.

In the top of the eighth inning in the second game, Monroe junior Taylor O'Leksy tripled to center. Junior Kirsten Vetterli was able to knock in the game-winning run when the Warriors' committed an error. O'Leksy went 1-for-2 with a walk and was hit by a pitch.

"O'Leksy played a strong game," Buvid said. "She was on base three of the four times. She made a catch in the fifth inning that was a game-saver."

Monroe (9-1, 3-0 Badger South) will play Orangeville at Helfaer Field in Milwaukee today.
