KENOSHA - Monroe senior Becca Armstrong tossed her first no-hitter in a 3-0 win over Indian Trail Saturday, April 27.
Armstrong led the Cheesemakers to a doubleheader sweep over Indian Trail 3-0 and tossed a two-hit shutout in the second game in Monroe's 10-0 win. She racked up 12 strikeouts in the first game and five in the second.
"She (Armstrong) was outstanding," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said. "It's the best she has thrown this year. She got a lot of strikeouts on her fastball and rise ball. She's on a little roll. She is pitching better and better every game."
Monroe's Katie Holmes went 2-for-3 to lead the Cheesemakers. Senior Briana Katzenberger had an RBI single to give the Cheesemakers a 2-0 lead.
"We are still in a little bit of a funk on offense," Buvid said. "We are not getting those hits with runners in scoring position."
Monroe (11-2, 3-0 Badger South) was able to draw 15 walks in the second game against Indian Trail. Indian Trail was also plagued by three errors.
"We got a lot of gift base runners," Buvid said. "We used the weekend as a tune-up to get ready for eight straight conference games the next two weeks."
Monroe junior Kayla Updike had an RBI double in the first inning to spark the Cheesemakers. Holmes added a two-run single that extended the lead to 7-0.
Monroe is atop the Badger South standings after Fort Atkinson and Milton lost last week. The Cheesemakers play four conference games this week starting with a game at Monona Grove today.
"We haven't played the big teams in conference yet," Buvid said of Fort Atkinson and Milton.
"We have to continue to pitch and defend like we have been," Buvid said. "The key is to get more consistent on offense and get more timely hits."
