Monroe softball team shuts down MG

MONROE - Becca Armstrong continued her dominating season in the pitching circle for the Monroe softball team Thursday night against Monona Grove. Armstrong struck out 13 Silver Eagles and gave up just 3 hits in a complete game 3-0 win.

"She's been very good lately, this was another fine effort," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said of Armstrong. "They only had a few hard hits. Her only walk came in the last inning. They had runners on first and second with no outs in the seventh. She had a strikeout and ground ball to end it. She showed good poise and toughness to end the game when they made a run. Thirteen strikeouts this late in the year ... it's been kind of a weird year, but to get that many this late, that's a lot. Hitters are usually catching up at this point."

Monroe got their first run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Kirsten Vetterli to score Taylor O'Lesky. Chandra McGuire hit a two-run home run in the fifth to extend the Cheesemaker lead to 3-0. Ellyn Grossen was another top offensive contributor for the Cheese, going 2-for-3 at the plate.

Monroe (14-2, 6-0 Badger South) now takes on Fort Atkinson (11-1, 7-1) today in a game with major implications in the Badger South race.

"It's going to be two very good softball teams. We'll see what happens," Buvid said. "We certainly think we have the pitching and defense to win. It's probably going to come down to timely hits."

Barneveld 20, Black Hawk 1

BARNEVELD - The Black Hawk softball team kept within striking distance of Barneveld for five innings, but the Eagles offense soared in the sixth and seventh innings, piling up 16 runs between the two innings to dispatch the Warriors.

Black Hawk's lone run came in the first inning. Barneveld scored four in the second to take the lead. Both teams were scoreless over the next three innings before Barneveld's outburst.

Abby Schiferl was the top performer at the plate for the Warriors, going 2-for-4.

Black Hawk hosts Juda-Albany today.

Boscobel 16, Darlington 2

DARLINGTON - It was a rough day for the Darlington softball team against Boscobel Thursday night, as the Redbirds fell to the Bulldogs in five innings.

Jena Foulker pitched all five innings for the Redbirds and gave up 13 earned runs on 15 hits.

"It's tough when she is the only pitcher we have," said Darlington coach Karen Bennett.

Darlington struggled in the field in the first inning, committing three of their four errors in the opening frame. Boscobel was able to get out to a 4-1 lead in the first inning.

"We dug ourselves a hole. Boscobel hit the ball, we just couldn't get out of it," Bennett said.

Offensively, the Redbirds had six hits. Jacke Johnson was the only Redbird with multiple hits, as she went 2-for-2 at the plate. Caitie Chiaverotti and Anna Fitzsimons each had a double and Taylor Cox added a triple.

Darlington (5-7, 3-6 SWAL) hosts Riverdale today in another conference game.

Juda-Albany 14, Pecatonica 3

BLANCHARDVILLE - Pecatonica hung with Juda-Albany for four innings Thursday night, but the Panthers broke the game open with a seven-run fifth inning on their way to a win.

"We kind of hung with them for awhile," said Pecatonica coach Chuck Meyer. "(Juda-Albany) did a good job of pressing the issue and putting the ball in play. They were making us make plays and we didn't do a whole lot of it."

Tabatha Davis started for the Panthers and gave up four hits over seven innings. Morganne Goecks led Juda-Albany offensively with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate. Davis, Kirstie Kauk and Carlie Peters all added two hits for the Panthers.

"We were a little shaky at first. We came on strong at the end," said Juda-Albany coach Bill Davis. "The conditions weren't very pleasant, but they were not pleasant for either team. I thought they answered pretty good, considering the conditions."

Michelle Francois led the Vikings with a 2-for-3 day at the plate.

"She's been hitting the ball well lately," Meyer said.

Juda-Albany (6-6, 3-4 Six Rivers East) plays at Black Hawk today. Pecatonica (2-10, 2-4) plays a doubleheader at Poynette on Saturday.

Luther Prep 17, New Glarus 0

NEW GLARUS - The New Glarus softball team couldn't catch an early break and ended up losing to Luther Prep, 17-0.

New Glarus had the bases loaded in the first inning with two outs when Hayley Latsch was hit by a ball in play running from first to second.

"We started out really well," said New Glarus coach Robert Wahl. "Instead of scoring a couple of runs with the ball in the gap, it hits her. It's just one of those things.

Emma Jackson started for the Glarner Knights and pitched four and one-third innings. She gave up five earned runs on five hits, but also walked nine. In total, New Glarus' pitchers walked 10 batters, 7 of which went on to score.

Tamara Elzen was the leading hitter for New Glarus with a 2-for-2 day at the plate.

New Glarus takes on Faith Christian Friday, May 3.
