FORT ATKINSON - The Monroe softball team's chance at repeating as Badger South Conference champions was dealt a blow Thursday with a 6-1 loss to Fort Atkinson.
Monroe (10-7, 5-1 Badger South) has a one-game lead over the Blackhawks in the loss column, but Fort Atkinson already has played Milton and Stoughton twice. Monroe coach Dale Buvid knew this was setting up like a championship week, as the Cheesemakers host Milton on Friday and Stoughton on Saturday. The Cheesemakers still control their own destiny.
"We told the girls we had to win two of the three games," Buvid said. "They (Fort Atkinson) are right in the race. They are right on our heels. We have our work cut out for us."
Monroe senior Meghan Roberts pitched a complete game and gave up three earned runs on seven hits.
The Cheesemakers' lone run came on a two-out RBI single by senior Maggie Schuttler in the seventh inning to score Jessica Beckman.
"We told the girls we can't play average against these teams and we played average," Buvid said. "They played better than us today. We just didn't get the big hits. They got the timely hits."
