PORTAGE - Monroe junior Jacob Kind and senior Jaron Kuester each ran for two touchdowns to lead the Cheesemakers to a 47-7 season-opening win over Portage on Friday.

Monroe shredded the Warriors' defense for a total of 408 rushing yards. Monroe junior running back Cole Murray rushed for 94 yards on 14 carries and scored one touchdown. The Cheesemakers had four running backs score touchdowns and five players total score at least one touchdown.

"All of the backs showed what they can do and ran really well," Monroe coach Curt Miller said. "They each bring something

different to the table. The reason we had so many guys score is because the big guys up front did their job. A big credit goes to our O-line. I think our kids are playing with a confidence level we haven't seen in a long time."

Kind opened the scoring by punching in a 1-yard TD run early in the first quarter to give the Cheesemakers a 7-0 lead.

The Cheesemakers broke the game open, erupting for

20 points in the second quarter. Monroe junior quarterback Tyler Elmer scored on a 7-yard run to start the second quarter. Kuester had a 6-yard TD run

to extend the Cheesemakers' lead to 20-0. Kind had a

14-yard TD run with 14 seconds to go in the first half to give the Cheesemakers a 27-7 lead.

The Cheesemakers added 20 points in the third quarter. Kuester had an 11-yard TD run. Monroe senior Cam Shaw raced in for an 8-yard TD run about midway through the third quarter to give the Cheesemakers a 41-7 lead. Murray capped the scoring with a 1-yard TD plunge.

Elmer completed 5 of 9 passes for 51 yards.

Monroe will play Baraboo its home opener next Friday.

"Last year, Baraboo keyed on Cody Wolf," Miller said of the Cheesemakers' 1,300-yard rusher who scored 19 touchdowns last season. "This year Baraboo will have a whole bunch to key on and that will give us an advantage."
