SPRING GREEN - The Monroe boys cross country team had three of the top 20 runners and finished fifth out of 18 teams at the Blackhawk Invitational Saturday.

Monroe senior Drake Ingold finished ninth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17 minutes, 6 seconds. Junior Kyle Legler took 12th (17:10) and senior Dylan Scace placed 19th (17:22).

"We had a good grouping through the top four runners with only a 45 second gap," Monroe co-coach Jim Ingold said. "We will need to close the gap through the top-five runners if we want to challenge for conference and sectionals. There is still plenty of season left and runners are still developing. Most runners felt tired from the hard week of practice."

Madison La Follette won the large school division with 59 points well ahead of runner-up Monona Grove (79). The Cheesemakers took fifth (124) behind fourth-place Dubuque Senior (100) and third-place Dodgeville-Mineral Point (89).

Monroe sophomore Dylan Fahrney took 31st (17:51). It was a personal-record time for Fahrney and the first time he has broken 18 minutes. Freshman Kyle Henry was 53rd (18:31) to round out the top-five runners for the Cheesemakers.

"Dylan Fahrney had a breakout race," Ingold said.

In the girls large school division, Monroe finished 12th out of 15 teams with 254 points.

Wisconsin Dells sophomore Laura Beghin was the individual champion (19:05) and she helped lead the Chiefs to the team title 26-93 over runner-up McFarland. The Wisconsin Dells had all five of its runners finish in the top 10.

Monroe freshman Anika Einbeck took 23rd (21:47) and freshman Jaci Hayes was 34th (22:20) to lead the Cheesemakers.

"Both of these two girls had good performances in a strong field of runners," Ingold said of Einbeck and Hayes. "They will only get better as the season progresses."

Senior Rachel Meier placed 49th (23:03) and junior Elise Smith placed 71st (24:17). Junior Maddie Bartelt took 77th (24:32).

Natalie Faith was taking the ACT test and missed the race.

"She (Faith) would have helped us crack the top 10 teams," Ingold said. "Most of the girls had tired legs from a hard week of practices. We can't rest for every meet and think we can reach our goals. Some meets we are going to work through and do our best on tired legs."

Darlington junior Payton Heinberg ran to the championship in the small school division with a time of 17 minutes.

Darlington had four runners finish in the top eight to help the Redbirds win the team title 38-104 over Wisconsin-Heights-Barneveld. New Glarus-Monticello took fifth (160), Albany placed 13th (327) and Pecatonica-Argyle was 14th (344) in the 18-team small school division.
