STOUGHTON - Monroe High School softball coach Joe O'Leksy had his players work on their swings during most of Monday's practice in preparation for a game at Stoughton.
The extra hitting worked wonders as Monroe slugged 16 hits and rolled to a 15-2 win over Stoughton on Tuesday.
Monroe (13-7, 7-3 Badger South) snapped a three-game losing streak.
"We worked three-fourths of the practice (Monday) on getting the ball out front and being more aggressive early in the count," O'Leksy said. "It really paid off."
Monroe sophomore Olivia Bobak went 3-for-5 with a double, triple and five RBI. Senior Jessie Bennett went 3-for-3. Sophomore Hailey Betthauser went 3-for-5 with two RBI, and freshman Grace Tostrud was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Junior Madison Katzenberger went 2-for-4, and junior Alysha Witt had a two-run triple.
The Cheesemakers broke the game open with a six-run second inning. Tostrud had a two-run single, and senior Lexi Hilliard delivered a two-out, three-run triple to help Monroe take a 7-0 lead.
Bobak pitched a complete game to get the win. She gave up two runs on five hits, struck out eight and walked five.
"She didn't have her best stuff, but she was still good enough," O'Leksy said. "We can't always rely on Bobak to shut everyone out. We had an offensive explosion. We have to be able to win when she's not at her best."
Monroe senior Carly Upmann made a diving catch in right center with the bases loaded in the second.
"Carly saved us a couple of runs with that catch," O'Leksy said. 'We played really good on defense."
In the fifth, catcher Meredith Hose threw to Tostrud at first, who made a perfect throw to Katzen-berger covering second to pick off a Vikings runner.
