MONROE - Maddie Knutson had a breakout soccer game that every player dreams about on Monday at Honey Creek Park.

Knutson pulled off a hat trick, scoring three goals to lead the Cheesemakers to their first win - a 10-0 trouncing of Dodgeville in 59 minutes, 46 seconds due to the mercy rule.

The sophomore said this is the first time she has scored three goals in a game.

"It felt really good to win by a lot," Knutson said. "It's definitely motivating us to do better for the season. I didn't want my head to get too big. I wanted to keep the ball going and give everyone else a chance. After scoring 10 goals, I feel we can do better this season going up against the better teams."

Monroe sophomores Vanessa Studer and Gabby Ludwig as well as senior Chelsea Haffele each scored two goals.

Monroe (1-2, 0-1 Badger South) had eight shots on goal in the first 5 minutes. Knutson put the Cheesemakers on the board, scoring on an assist from freshman Emily Frankowski at 6:33.

"After they had those first eight shots, they really composed themselves," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "They realized they were going against the wind and they were attacking hard. They just got their composure. Maddie really sparked that with her first goal. Maddie is really good at seeing that to finish off a cross or a pass. She has that instinct to get to the goal and finish it off."

Knutson wasn't the only one with scoring instincts. After her goal, the Cheesemakers broke the game open with five more first-half goals. Studer fired in a shot to the near post and Ludwig scored off a corner kick to give the Cheesemakers a 3-0 lead at 27:02. Studer beat the Dodgers' keeper with a shot to the near post at 30:02.

Haffele scored two goals in about three minutes. Haffele's first goal came from about 15 yards away when she lofted a shot into the wind. She scored her second goal from about 10 yards away to give the Cheesemakers a 6-0 lead at 35:51.

The Cheesemakers picked right where they left off to start the second half. Ludwig scored at 41:54 and Knutson scored a goal on an assist from Ludwig at 48:32. Knutson scored her third goal on an assist from Studer, and senior Ashley Segner scored the final goal.

Monroe will play at Madison Edgewood on Thursday.

"We really needed this win," O'Neill said. "We were really happy with our scoring. We knew we could score goals. We were really trying to work on our shape and some of the things we didn't do in those first two games."
