MONROE - Gabby Ludwig had a Senior Night to remember, scoring three goals to power the Monroe girls soccer team to a 6-1 win over Stoughton Tuesday.

In addition to the hat trick, Ludwig added two assists and sophomore Maddie Kallgren scored two goals and had one assist.

"It feels awesome," Ludwig said of scoring three goals and getting the Badger Conference win. "It's not just one person. It's the whole team. I'm really proud of everyone. We really picked it up in the second half. We really needed the win in the conference to boost our confidence."

Ludwig scored the first goal by beating Stoughton's goalkeeper and sending in a shot to the near post on an assist from Madeline Knutson to give the Cheesemakers a 1-0 lead. The Cheesemakers (7-6, 2-3 Badger South) had to deal with two lightning delays that lasted about 52 minutes.

Kallgren scored her first goal by lofting a shot over the keeper to give the Cheesemakers a 2-0 lead at 33:19. Ludwig then hit the far post with a shot and Monroe's Brooke Ramos was there to punch in the rebound for a goal to extend the Cheesemakers' lead to 3-0.

"After the first delay we were kind of flat and we lost focus a little bit," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "We talked about that during the second delay. They came out the rest of the first half and the second and played fired up. They just played a different game."

The Cheesemakers dominated the game, outshooting the Vikings 16-8. O'Neill said it was nice to have two times more shots on goal.

"It's great, but we have had other games this year where we have had a lot of shots and didn't score," O'Neill said. "They kept their composure. Offensively, it's probably our best game we have had this year. There were some great runs and great combinations between Maddie and Gabby."

Kallgren hit a powerful shot off the keeper's chest and Ludwig was there to track the ball down, scoring a goal to give the Cheesemakers a 4-0 lead. Kallgren scored her second goal on a cross from Ludwig at 65:17. Thirty-nine seconds later, Ludwig raced to the near post and scored on a shot right past the keeper to extend the Cheesemakers' lead to 6-0.

"We really have worked in practice on getting to the ball and having composure in front of the net," Ludwig said. "It doesn't matter if it's a ricochet. Every shot counts."

Monroe senior goalkeeper Shyanna Kelley had five saves.

"She (Kelley) really had some key saves," O'Neill said. "She made great decisions."

Monroe will look to get to .500 in conference with a game at Fort Atkinson Thursday.

"I just feel we need to be composed and everyone has to keep up their intensity and play together," Ludwig said.
