EVANSVILLE - The Monroe Senior Legion baseball team earned a season sweep of Evansville with a 12-8 six inning win on Friday.
Cory Kundert pitched four innings and gave up just two runs on three hits to get the win. Kundert struck out five and walked six. The game was called after six innings since it was too dark.
Monroe (6-3, 5-1 in league play) had multi-hit games from Taylor Riese (2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored) and Taylor Weckerly (2-for-3 with three RBI).
"This is our year," Monroe coach Bruce Rear said. "We want to win the league. Evansville has a very young team."
Monroe scored three runs in the first and three more in the second to help them jump out to a 12-2 inning in the fifth. "We were trying to get out of there in five (innings)," Rear said.
Jon Elmer and Mitch Marty each pitched innings in relief. Elmer gave up five runs on four hits and walked three. Marty tossed a shutout inning in relief. At the plate, Elmer went 1-for-2 and scored two runs.
"We hit the ball pretty good," Rear said. "Everyone got at least one hit. That was good to see."
Monroe will play at the Verona tournament today.
After the Verona tournament, Monroe is at Milton on July 2.
