PORTAGE - Junior Sydney Mathiason had a big match with 21 kills and four blocks to propel the Monroe High School volleyball team to a five-set win over Portage in the regular-season finale on Thursday.

Mathiason's aggressive play at the net helped the Cheesemakers pull out a 24-26, 29-27, 25-22, 23-25, 15-13 win over the Warriors.

"She (Mathiason) had a great game at the net," Monroe coach Heidi Witt said. "They got aggressive at the net. We played some great volleyball. It was awesome to watch going into the regional. They didn't get down on themselves. I think we had some really strong net play and good serving."

Monroe senior Chloe Schroeder delivered 13 kills and three blocks, and senior Alicia Kuester had 12 kills and five aces.

Monroe junior Alysha Witt racked up 33 assists and senior Hannah Neuenschwander added 18 assists. Senior Lexi Hilliard posted a team-high 19 digs. Witt also added four aces for the Cheesemakers.

The Cheesemakers (15-15) received a No. 6 seed in the WIAA Division 2 regional tournament and will play at third-seeded River Valley at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

If Monroe beats River Valley, the Cheesemakers would play the winner of seventh-seeded Sauk Prairie and second-seeded Richland Center in a regional semifinal at 7 p.m. Oct. 20.
