MONROE - Monroe golf coach Brian Jensen didn't have any problems seeing the silver lining after the Cheesemakers waited out a 25-minute rain delay Wednesday against Monona Grove at the Monroe Country Club.
Monroe junior Kyle Bruce, who shot a 3-over-par 37, helped lead the Cheesemakers to a 164-174 dual match win over Monona Grove. It's been a big turnaround for the Cheesemakers who didn't win a conference match last year. The Cheesemakers finished 3-3 in the Badger South this season.
"For the kids we knew it was an accomplishment for them to get to 3-3," Jensen said. "We have had two other matches we could have won."
Bruce was at an even par through the first three holes before he double bogeyed No. 4 and followed that up with a bogey. He closed strong with four straight pars.
"He put it together again and had four good pars in a row," Jensen said. "It's nice to see him put together some good scores for nine and 18-hole rounds. It's good to be moving forward and playing well with conference on Wednesday."
Yossapron "Ice" Luengsaphitkul shot a season best 4-over-par 38. Dylon Wilde carded a 44 and freshman Eric Timm finished with a 45 to round out the top four for the Cheesemakers.
"I was happy to see him put a good score together," Jensen said of Luengsaphitkul. "He has been hitting the ball well all year. He just doesn't have the scores to show for it. To see him break 40 will be big for his confidence going into conference and regionals."
The Cheesemakers play three, 18-hole matches next week. On Monday, Monroe will play at the Black Hawk Invitational. The Cheesemakers on Tuesday will play in the Badger Challenge at the House on the Rock Golf Course. Monroe on Wednesday will play in the Badger Conference tournament at the Springs.
"I would like to see them put together some scores and at least be competitive," Jensen said of the conference tournament. "We will put a little more focus on regionals."
The Monroe junior varsity team beat Monona Grove 171-180. Cameron Elmer shot a 42 to lead the JV. Three Cheesemaker golfers finished with as 43 including Caleb Pagel, Blake Duffy and Jason Atkinson.
Jensen was just excited the Cheesemakers were able to get the match in and didn't have to reschedule.
"You don't want to have to do that this close to conference," he said. "We were glad to get it in."
