DODGEVILLE - Monroe sophomore Maddie Kallgren scored three goals for a hat trick and the Cheesemakers rolled to a 6-2 season-opening win over Dodgeville Monday, April 7.
Monroe senior Gabby Ludwig scored two goals and had two assists to help propel the Cheesemakers who exploded for six goals in their first game.
"The entire team took it up a notch," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "It was a great way to start our season and nice to get the win on the road."
Monroe junior Kelley Baumann put the Cheesemakers on the board scoring a goal on an assist from Brooke Ramos at 17 minutes, 10 seconds. About 2 minutes later, Ludwig scored a goal on a pass from Kallgren to give the Cheesemakers a 2-0 lead. Kallgren scored her first goal on an assist from Ludwig at 20:50 to give the Cheesemakers a 3-0 lead at the half.
Kallgren helped the Cheesemakers get off to a strong start in the second half scoring a goal at 63:54. Ludwig scored her second goal on an assist from Hannah Calaway at 75:21 to give the Cheesemakers a 5-1 lead. Kallgren scored her third goal on a pass by Ludwig.
"There were a lot of really nice combinations with Maddie and Gabby," O'Neill said. "They have worked very hard in the offseason. They have really improved their game."
Monroe senior Shyanna Kelley and junior Gwendolyn Ambrose split goalie duties. Kelley had six saves and Ambrose had five saves.
"Our midfielders really stepped up tonight," she said.
