MONROE - The Monroe Senior Legion baseball team rediscovered the winning formula getting solid offensive production and big relief pitching to hang on for a 6-5 win over Fort Atkinson on Wednesday.
Monroe pounded out 12 hits and had four players with multi-hit games. Taylor Riese went 2 for 2 with one RBI, Mitchell Riese was 2 for 4 with one RBI, Tyler Malcook was 2 for 4 and Drew Nafzger was 2 for 4.
With the win, Monroe improves to 8-5.
Matt Woodstock delivered a two-run double in the first inning to give Monroe a 2-0 lead.
"It was good to see them swing the bats again," Monroe Coach Eric Losenegger said. "They came out ready to play."
Monroe's Kevin Klopfenstein led off the fifth with a single and Taylor Riese followed with an RBI double down the right field line. Mitchell Riese then came through with an RBI single that gave Monroe a commanding, 6-2 lead.
However, Fort Atkinson rallied when Eric Burrow crushed a home run off Monroe pitcher Kris Rieder in the sixth.
"That home run almost went to the football field," Losenegger said. "That's the longest home run I've ever seen hit there."
Rieder pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up four earned runs on 10 hits. He struck out two and walked two. Rieder ran into trouble in the seventh and gave up two runs. With runners on second and third and Burrow coming up, Losenegger brought in Kramer Henning in relief to close the door. Henning threw a slider and Burrow grounded out to first to end the threat.
"Burrow saw Kris one too many times," Losenegger said. "I didn't want him to see him again. I went to Kramer because we had to find a way to get him out. It gave him (Henning) a base just in case he walked him (Burrow)."
