BARABOO - The Monroe-New Glarus girls swim team didn't have anyone qualify for the state meet at the WIAA Division 2 Baraboo sectional Saturday after the WIAA released the top 12 times in addition to the sectional champions that earned state berths.
Each sectional champion earns an automatic state berth and the WIAA takes the next 12 fastest times from each sectional to state.
New Glarus sophomore Maddie Hammer finished eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 10.52 seconds. Her time was part of the top 16 in the state, but a swimmer in the Cudahy sectional who had a slower time earned the automatic state berth by being a sectional champion.
In addition to Hammer, the Cheesemakers had three relays that just missed qualifying for state in a loaded Baraboo sectional that included three of the state's top-five ranked Division 2 teams in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association state poll - Madison Edgewood (No. 1), McFarland (No. 2) and DeForest (No. 5). Monroe-New Glarus, the smallest team in the sectional, finished ninth (105 points) out of 14 teams. Edgewood ran away with the sectional team title 401.5-296.5 over McFarland.
"It was a day of 'so close'," Monroe-New Glarus coach Linda Moser said. "There were tears as they had to let go of their goal of state, but then the realization came of what amazing things they accomplished this year as a team. They won three conference duals and two non-conference duals. It's something that hasn't been achieved in six years. They placed better in every invitational they went to this year than last year. Their conference finish is better than it has in over six years. They finished ahead of where they did last year at sectionals and scored more points in every meet this year than last year. They did all of this and more with only 13 girls."
The Cheesemakers' 200 freestyle relay team of senior Abby Oudinot, junior Skylar Lassen, junior Grace Keith and Hammer finished ninth (1:44.33) and cut four seconds off their season-best time, and just missed a school record by one second. The time was the 18th fastest in the state from all of the sectionals.
Oudinot and senior Anna Wolf teamed with Lassen and Keith to take eighth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:54.02), which was four seconds of the Cheesemakers' PR this season, but it was the 19th best time in the state and three spots away from qualifying for state.
"The 400 relay time of 3:54.02) I have not seen in over six years," Moser said. "The 200 free relay team missed the team record by one second. Those are huge accomplishments."
The Cheesemakers' 200 medley relay team of Keith, Hammer, senior Anna Wolf and Oudinot took ninth (1:56.49), but was two spots short of state with the 18th best time out of all the sectionals.
Other top 10 finishes for the Cheesemakers included Hammer taking sixth in the 100 freestyle (55.86), Lassen finishing ninth in the 100 backstroke (1:02.90) and ninth in the 200 freestyle (2:03.12).
