FREEPORT - New Glarus sophomore Nina Schiro won the 500-yard freestyle and helped lead the Monroe-New Glarus girls swim team to a second-place finish in the 11-team Freeport Invitational on Saturday.
Schiro won the 500 freestyle with a personal record time of 5 minutes, 49.70 seconds, which was her fastest time in that event by 20 seconds.
Byron captured the team title racking up 294.5 points. The Cheesemakers finished second (242) and Sterling, Illinois was third.
Schiro also took second in the 100 backstroke with a PR of 1:05.29, which is two seconds faster than her previous best time.
"After three weeks of swimming against the toughest three teams in our conference, today was a breath of fresh air as the girls saw their times improve and saw their team swim to a second-place finish," Monroe-New Glarus coach Linda Moser said in an email. "Today was a confidence builder for the girls. This was a new invitational for us and we swam against swimmers we normally don't see during our season. I think that helped not knowing what we were up against combined with a week of amping up our practices."
Monroe-New Glarus junior Maddie Hammer finished second in the 200 freestyle (2:07.47) and senior Skylar Lassen took third (2:08).
The freshman-sophomore 200 medley relay team of Linnea Tabaka, Cammi Ganshert, Emily Meritt and Hannah Swenson placed second (2:17.23). Meritt and Swenson teamed with Dee Delforge and Kayleigh Nesbitt to take third in the freshman-sophomore 200 freestyle relay (2:05.66).
The Cheesemakers also set several PR times including Ally Einbeck in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke; Tabaka in the 500 freestyle (7:01.13), a 17-second improvement; Ganshert in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke; junior Samantha Ellefson in the 100 freestyle; junior Madison Katzenberger in the 100 freestyle; and Nesbitt with a 6-second improvement in the 200 freestyle.
Monroe-New Glarus will host Monona Grove in a dual meet Tuesday at the Green County YMCA.
"We are at the point in our season where every practice is going to be extremely challenging so they are more ready physically and mentally for conference and sectionals," Moser said.
