LODI - The Monroe-New Glarus girls swim cooperative program made history winning its first invitational Saturday.

The Cheesemakers swam to the championship of the Lodi Invitational. It marks the first time the Monroe-New Glarus swim co-op, which is in its fourth year, has won an invitational.

The Cheesemakers set 11 personal-records and won six events in the invitational.

"Before the co-op, Monroe had won a few invitationals, but not since 2003, so this was big for the girls," Monroe-New Glarus coach Linda Moser said. "The Lodi Invitational was specifically for smaller teams like Monroe-New Glarus, so it made the playing field a lot more equal in many aspects."

Monroe-New Glarus won with 290 points, which was just ahead of Lodi-Wisconsin Heights (271).

Monroe-New Glarus senior Maddie Hammer won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 1.77 seconds and took first in the 100 butterfly (1:03.30). Maddie's sister, freshman Mekenzie Hammer, won the 100 backstroke (1:00.06) and took second in the 100 butterfly (1:04.67).

Mekenzie Hammer teamed with Francesca Schiro, Anna Newcomer and Cammi Ganshert to win the 200 medley relay (2:02.16).

Mekenzie Hammer and Schiro teamed with Ganshert and Maddie Hammer to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:59.09).

Junior Nina Schiro placed third in the 100 backstroke (1:06.33) and Francesca Schiro was third in the 100 freestyle (59.65).

Monroe junior Linnea Tabaka set a PR in the 500 freestyle and finished third with a time of 6:48.13. She also set a PR in the 100 backstroke (1:20.28).

Monroe sophomore Laurel Houston set two personal-records in the 50 freestyle (29.84) and in the 100 freestyle (1:10.06). Junior Anna Latimer set two PRs in the 50 freestyle (35.48) and the 100 backstroke (1:29.36). Sophomore Kayleigh Nesbitt set a PR in the 200 individual medley (2:53.68).

"At the break, Lodi was ahead of Monroe-New Glarus, but the girls stayed focused and continued to put forth 100 percent" Moser said. "The excitement when the final score was announced is something, we as a team, will always remember."
